Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi (Late)





Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi politician and former caretaker prime minister born on 14 Aug 1931 in New Jatoi Town, District Naushahro Feroze. He also founded National People's Party and remained its Chairman. He died on 20 November 2009 in London due to long time illness in the age of 78 years.
Ghulam Mustafa passed senior Cambridge examination from Karachi Grammar School. He went to England for higher education in the 1952, however he returned back within a year due to ill health condition of his father. His grandfather, Khan Bahadur Imam Bakhsh Khan Jatoi was also member of Legislative Assembly of Mumbai in British government during 1923, 1927, and 1931. Mustafa Jatoi had three brothers and he was the eldest of his brothers.
He began his political career from 1952 after becoming chairman of district board of Nawabshah district. On his appointment, he was honored as youngest chairman of the district board. In 1958, He was appointed as MPA of West Pakistan for the first time. In 1965, he won election again. In 1969, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi joined Peoples Party and was elected MNA in 1970 from the platform of Pakistan Peoples Party. During this time, he was given political affairs, port & shipping, natural resources, communications, railways and telecommunications in the government of Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
In 1973, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi became Chief Minister Sindh and remained in this seat office till 1977. Subsequently, he also the distinction for having the longest serving Chief Minister in Sindh before Martial Law. Jatoi played important role in Revival Democracy Movement (MRD) and was also arrested in 1983 and 1985. Later, he found his own party with the name National Peoples Party. Several large leaders joined the party. Mustafa Jatoi was the chairman of the party.
Mustafa Jatoi became founder of Islamic Democratic Alliance in 1988. In 1989, he was elected MNA in by-election from Kot Addu and elected as leader of Opposition in National Assembly. Mustafa Jatoi became caretaker prime minister of the country after the ousting of Benazir Bhutto, while later he supported opposition in anti-Nawaz Sharif government, led by Benazir Bhutto, then in the 1993 election. He contested with PPP while he was in National Alliance. During this time National Alliance won 16 seats in National Assembly.
Mustafa Jatoi's sons are also in politics. His son Ghulam Murtaza Khan Jatoi won National People's Party's flag from Naushahro Feroze constituency NA-211 on 12 Feb 2008 general elections. He defeated PPP candidate, while his second son, Arif Mustafa Jatoi, won PS 19 constituency and his third son Masroor Khan Jatoi won PS 23. Arif Mustafa remained as Minister of Food and Agriculture while he also became Senator for the Jatoi family. It is a record that four sons succeeded in any legislative forum at one time and were members of National and Provincial Assemblies as well as Senate.
Ghulam Mustafa had five sons and three sons; his five sons include Ghulam Murtaza Khan, Masroor Khan, Tariq Mustafa, Arif Mustafa and Asif Mustafa. While, his son Tariq Mustafa died due to unknown reason.
