Jamshoro


 

Jamshoro city located on right bank of Indus River is 18 kms in northwest of Hyderabad and 150 kms northeast of Karachi. Jamshoro was a little village during the last period of Mirs’ era, which was established by a man namely Jam caste Shoro. The city remained administrative control of Karachi District. However, it became Deh (Union Council) Taluka Kotri on becoming of District Dadu in 1931. Subsequently, Jamshoro established as District Headquarter from 2004 with Kotri, Sehwan Sharif, Thana Bulla Khan and Manjhand talukas. This district holds 30 union councils and 157 revenue villages.

District Jamshoro holds 993,142 with 180,922 houses and 71% rural settlement. Approximately, 95% Population of the city consists of settlers from various parts of interior Sindh who shifted to the city after partition. Therefore, city holds number of different Sindhi tribal and ethnic groups. The city is holds mainly Sindhi with a considerable community of Pathans, Baloch and Seraikis. Some people of Brahuis, Punjabis and Muhajir community also live in the city. District Jamshoro borders with Dadu District in North; in East, Indus River separates it from Hyderabad and Matyari  and Nawab Shah districts; District Thatta is located in South, and District Karachi lies in south west. From west, Kheerthar Range separates Jamshoro from Sindh and District Lasbela of Balochistan.

District Jamshoro covers 11,517 Sq Kms. Agriculture is the main source of income. Taluka Sehwan is hotter than other parts of the district and remains normally cool during winters.

District Jamshoro is rich in marble, salika sand, limestone, gravels, silt. These minerals are mainly recovered from Thana Bula Khan and Sehwan Talukas whereas; coal is also obtained from Lakhra area of Taluka Manjhand.

Majority the population of District Jamshoro is established as rural and most of the population relies on cultivation of agricultural land. Whereas, community living in mountainous area keep cattle while Mallahs of Manchhar Lake earn their daily wages through fishing. Nooriabad and Kotri are two big industrial zones of District Jamshoro. Where, more than 500 different factories are established. As per survey, 20% of district Jamshoro are employed in federal and provincial departments.

Jamshoro city is also famous in province as well as country due to important educational institutions i.e. Sindh University, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) and Mehran Engineering University. Besides there are other educational departments like Sindhi Adabi Board, Institute of Sindhology, Bureau of Curriculum, Sindh Text Book Board. Cadet College Petaro is also located some away from the city from where important personalities of Pakistan got education. Sindh University was initially established at Hyderabad and later was shifted to Jamshoro with the untiring efforts of Allama II Kazi. There was established a medical school in Jamshoro during 1881. This school was upgraded to college in 1942 and it was later affiliated with Sindh University and renamed as Liaqat Medical College in 1951. Presently, it holds the status of University. In 1963, there was established a Engineering College and affiliated with Sindh University later it was upgraded to University in 1977 named as Mehran Engineering University.
