Liaqat Ali Jatoi s/o Abdul Hameed Jatoi born on 5 Jan 1948 at Beto Jatoi, Taluka Mehar, District
Dadu. He is nephew of Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi ex caretaker PM and cousin of Ghulam
Murtaza Jatoi. He started his primary education from his native school. He was
sent to Cadet College Petaro where, he studied from 1961 to 1964 and passed his
matriculation. He did MA (Political Science) from Sindh University in 1970 and later
appointed as Lecturer in Sindh University. Liaqat Jatoi belongs to landlord family
and holds ancestral lands and property in Dadu District.
He started his political career after
after got elected as member of National Assembly in 1977. However, this assembly was disbanded by General Zia-ul-Haq after few weeks of elections.
Liaqat Jatoi was also appointed as member of Federal Council (Majlis-e-Shoora)
in 1980-81 during Zia-ul-Haq government.
He also won the elections of GE 1985,
1990 and 1997 on MPA seat. He was appointed as Provincial Minister for Finance,
Excise and Taxation in 1990 after starting of his alliance with PML (N) of Nawaz
Sharif.
Liaquat Ali Jatoi was appointed as CM Sindh
after GE 1997 and served in this position till end of Oct 1998, when Governor's
Rule was imposed in Sindh due to the law and order situation. Liaqat Jatoi was
elected as MNA during GE 2002 and was inducted into Federal Cabinet as
Minister. Initially was on portfolio of Minister of Industries, later he was made
Minister for Water and Power Management.
District Dadu emerged during the period
of 1998-2007, with Jatoi no defeat in of his politics. His house in Dadu
was set on fire by PPP activists in 2007, when Benazir Bhutto was assassinated and
protests took place all over country. Jatoi lost his seat to PPP, due the
sympathy of people of Sindh on assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
He formed Sindh Awami Ittehad after exile
of Nawaz Sharif and merged party again with PML (N) on return of Nawaz Sharif
was back in Pakistan.
Liaqat Jatoi contested elections during
GE 2013 on ticket of PML (N), however he was defeated by a massive margin of
45000 votes by Imran Zafar Laghari son of Haji Zafar Ali Khan Laghari, former
PPP Federal Minister. He claimed that heavy rigging was done during GE 2013
since, he lodged appeal in election tribunal on PS 76, resultantly; he won the
case and became member of Parliamentary assembly.
Liaqat Jatoi joined PTI in political
party in Apr 2017 and contested GE 2018 in NA-234 (Dadu I) on PTI ticket but
could not win and his opponent Imran Zafar Leghari won the seat after getting 96,038
(52.84%) votes.
There were rumours going during start of
2020 about Liaqat Jatoi for leaving his current party and joining Pakistan
Peoples Party. However, he avoided to confirm in an interview and said that he
is receiving offers from PPP stakeholders and he will decide finally after consultation
and consent from his supporters.
He boosted up his area with many
development works during the duration of his Chief Minister and
Minsters for Power and Water Management especially in Taluka Mehar of District Dadu. He has also provided many facilities to his native village i.e Beto
Jatoi and made it a model village.
